Experience (XP)

XP increases your attributes. You gather XP from defeating enemies and completing quests. Difficult quests are more rewarding and offer a lot more XP than easier ones. Talking to NPCs also provides marginal XP. When you fill the XP bar, you level up. You don’t need to allocate points into anything, your stats will grow automatically and you will deal increased damage to enemies and take less damage from their hits at higher levels. The recommended level requirement for quests is indicated in the Quest menu. A standard rule is to complete quests that meet or are slightly above your level requirement. Not more than two levels though.

Ascension

Is another system to permanently improve your performance. It can be found in the Ascension menu and you can study different development trees. They are sorted by theme (Magic, Recovery, Techniques etc.) and can be cycled through with “L1/R1” or “LB/RB”. These “talent trees” are interconnected and are called nexus. Each nexus requires a specific AP cost investment. While early nexuses cost a detrimental amount of AP, the price rise is sharp the further you move down the tree. AP is gained from various sources, like quests, killing mobs with certain moves (warp-striking), completing quests or conversations. Additional optional strategy objectives can award it too.

These are displayed when you start a battle. Earlier objectives are easy and as you advance they become more difficult, like when you have to defend from an enemy assault. When you have AP, nexuses can be purchased in your desired order. The choice will vastly affect your performance and by not selecting specific valuable upgrades can put you in a disadvantage. You have the option to unlock Ignis’s Enhancement technique early on in game. Noctis’s weapon will be imbued with the element your enemy is vulnerable to, which gives you an advantage. There are also certain nexuses that provide AP bonuses during early stages. Many different variables have to be taken into account and it’s best to read them through so you can accommodate them to your playstyle.

Because of the action based in nature, there are both passive and active skills under ascension menu. For example, passive skills can be like equipping an addition accessory, gain more AP while performing a specific action, increase certain stats, and so on. Active skills, on the other hand, need to be executed directly by a player to perform a specific action such as dashing in the air, executing a specific attack, and so on.

Each character has over 50 skill nodes. Some skills are available to all characters while some is a character’s specific skill. For example, Gladiolus skills under “teamwork” are mostly about dealing a significant move though the greatsword or protecting Noctis while Prompto’s skills aim to inflict status to enemies.

Skill Nodes can be unlocked by an ability point (AP) which is obtained through several ways such as leveling up, having a conversation, completing special objectives during combat, and so on. AP does not share between each character. For example, if a player has 24 Ability Points left, it does not mean that he has 24 AP for Noctis, Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignist. Instead, he needs to choose which character he wants to spend these points with. A player can only focus on empowering a certain character or make it balance between all four characters.

In addition, some skills require certain skills before they are available to unlock.

A player has a full freedom to decide which way he wants to progress each character in Final Fantasy XV. A magic lover may want to spend points on magic while some might want to progress on combat instead.

Below information is current known skill nodes taken from gamefaqs.com. Please note that It is still incomplete and subject to change when the game comes out.

Gear

One of the most important permanent means to improve your party performance. It provides boosts to stats as long as the gear piece is equipped. You will only unequip gear to upgrade it most of the time. Gear in the game is mostly sold by various merchants and vendors that you unlock my completing the story line. Obviously will you be able to buy more advanced gear at higher levels.

Gear costs Gil that you get by completing quests and vendoring items to merchants. Gearing can get quite costly that’s why it is super important to evaluate the gear you buy, because you won’t be able to buy everything at the same time. For example if a dungeon is full of mobs with weakness to Fire, it’s more rational to buy a Fire-imbued weapon that will be better than a defensive gear piece. If you need to farm Gil to buy critical upgrades, consider completing side quests or farm local monsters.
